Lumikhâ 2021: We Are Growing

The past 2 years, Lumikhâ has developed from an Art Showcase to a community. 2020 alone, challenged the arts to be relevant in the times of pandemic and civil unrest. These works made in unprecedented times show what we’ve been through. When we stop working, we pick up a brush and raise our fists. It was time to question everything we were raised to believe in.

We are both the seed and its environment. We must acknowledge our privileges, nurture abilities, pray on what we cannot control, take note of whose voices are still outside of this room, and understand ourselves. Our roots are already planted and our branches are reaching out.

This Lumikhâ, we will be crossing societal barriers and uplifting conversations between different cultures.

Like the individual trees to a forest, communities are not one and whole –but made up of interconnected life, all facing toward the sun.

As we move through this narrative for Lumikhâ, keep in mind our pillars:

Pillars

Roots

Where did we come from? What tools did our ancestors use to survive? What does it mean for other generations who are uprooted?

Environment

Where are we growing? What are the difficult conversations we’ve had to have with the generations before us? Have we truly faced anti-blackness, colonial mentality, and outdated beliefs on mental health?

Branches

How do we reach out to different communities? What are our similarities? How do we mutually benefit from each other without overstepping boundaries?

Leaves

How do we soak up sunlight? What are we learning (from one another, and for one another)? What should we unlearn together?

Fruits

What are we sharing with others? Mindfulness, solidarity, and healing.

Mindfulness

What are my privileges? What are my struggles? What does this future look, feel, taste, smell, sound like?

Solidarity

Rather than standing alongside someone else in support, let us realize our collective action and how it steps beyond allyship. Who is seated at this table? Who is missing? Where can I step down and uplift someone else at this moment?

Healing

Collectively, individually. Healing is safety. Healing is rest. Healing is decolonizing. Healing is liberation. When have we healed? Where (or who) do we seek healing (from)?

Seeds

What are we planting for the next generation?

From We Have Begun and We Are Here, we want you all to know that WE ARE GROWING.
